Life on the Road- Short Excursion

Time spent: 1 night
Hotel: The Cotton Sail Hotel Savannah, Tapestry Collection by Hilton
Transportation: Enterprise Rental Car (Cumberland, MD to Key West, FL)
Best Restaurants: Vic’s on the river, Cotton & Rye
Must See: Bull Street walk from river to Forsyth Park
Charleston and Savannah kind of go hand in hand when you think of “Southern Charm.” So it makes sense that we headed to Savannah before making our way to Florida. We didn’t spend much time in our hotel, but Cotton Sail Hotel offered a beautiful view of the river with a small outdoor patio from our room, and a rooftop bar. We spent less than 24 hours here, but we certainly go our steps in. The open container law on the river walk made the afternoon a little more fun as we enjoyed beers and read about he history of Savannah. Our biggest regret…eating TOO much. We were able to get a seat at Vic’s on the River to enjoy the fried green tomatoes. From the window of the restaurants we watched large cargo ships flow down the river and tourists enjoy the paddle boats. On the west side of the river walk we did a little shopping in the outdoor market place that extended into the very unique J.W. Marriot. A favorite stop of Andrea’s was the jewelry store 13 Secrets. Their unique collection of beautiful pieces mixed with well known artists and brands made for a ton of fun shopping around. The staff was extremely helpful and even seemed to enjoy talking through all of the pieces that caught my eye.

Following a little shopping, we made our way to Forsyth Park by walking down X Street. The beautiful streets between the river walk and Forsythe Park are lined with weeping willows, cute bars and restaurants, more shops, and large southern mansions. We could have walked these streets for hours, but the views in Forsyth Park also kept our attention. The X fountain is even more stunning in person, and we saw multiple brides and grooms pose under the willows for spectacular wedding pictures. We stopped at the bar in the middle of the park for a quick drink and to enjoy our surroundings.

Our final stop in Savannah was Cotton & Rye for cornbread, fried chicken, and their delicious burger. This little restaurant is a bit out of the touristy areas, but totally worth the trip! We fell in love, once again, with the southern hospitality Cotton & Rye provided. However, as we mentioned, we fell into a trap of eating too much and by the end of the meal we wanted nothing more than to sleep off our food comas and prepare for the next leg of our journey.
Regrets: Not jumping on the river boat to see what it was all about! Eating too much and not being able to enjoy the nightlife!
Overrated: Not much….
